Sciencéthic Isostasy Model
Order code: 032 017SCIENCÉTHIC ISOSTASY MODEL
This analogical model shows how tectonic plates are “floating” on the asthenosphere and enables students to study isostasy phenomenon. It includes a vertical tube that can be filled with a safe and easy to clean water gel that has a density close to 1 simulating the asthenosphere. The crust or lithosphere is simulated by plastic pieces with a density of 0.83.
The ratio of density between the asthenosphere and lithosphere are modelled so that vertical displacements will have the same range as in reality. In order to get the best observation of the phenomenon the plastic pieces have three different colours. White plastic pieces simulate the polar cap. Students can observe late equilibrium when the ice is melting or when the crust gets thinner. A vertical scale provides 'altitude measurement' and allows the possibility to quantitatively measure isostasy displacement.
Contents:
• Set of 18 pieces with a density of 0.83
(16 simulating the crust, 2 white simulating the polar cap)
• Tube with 2 scales (1 with values, 1 without any value)
• Total height of 380mm
• Water Gel, Density ≈ 1 (98% of water) to be mixed with water; enough to fill 2 tubes.
