IEC ELECTROMAGNET 'U' CORE AND ARMATURE 12V DC
This simple electromagnet consists of two 10mm diameter iron cores inserted into bobbins and wound with copper wire. Each iron core is welded to a yoke so that a U-shaped magnet is formed. Connect either wires or 4mm banana plugs to the socket head spin free terminals on each side of the bobbin. The two bobbin coils are connected in series with one another so that the current in one coil is the reverse direction to the other. When DC current flows through the coils, one pole becomes a North pole and the other becomes a South pole.

A steel plate with a hook fitted becomes the armature or moving part of the electromagnet. The force holding the armature to the cores increases with the increase of current through all the turns of both coils in series. Weights can be hung to the hook to determine the holding force of the electromagnet.

Can be used on either AC or DC to demonstrate differences.
