HORIZON BIO-ENERGY DISCOVERY KIT
Demonstrates the latest in fuel cell technology using ethanol as a fuel. The fuel cell kit directly converts chemical energy in ethanol (alcohol) to electrical energy without combustion. The device can run non-stop for hours, providing an amazing demonstration of next-generation bio-fuel cell technology. Horizon’s direct ethanol fuel cell consists of a small chamber within which the ethanol solution (90% water, 10% ethanol, similar to wine in alcoholic content) is in contact with the cell’s membrane on the anode side, while the cathode is open to the ambient air. Electricity is produced as the alcohol solution slowly oxidises to vinegar. Once this process is completed, a purge mechanism allows more ethanol to flow into the reaction chamber, simultaneously expelling the waste products.
The experiment set and desktop fan is able to run for 8 - 12 hours with a few drops of ethanol. It is possible to experiment with any kind of primary alcohol solution between 10-15%.
