Description
This key experiment investigates reaction rates for a range of chemical reactions under different conditions. Data can be collected to enable investigations of variable relationships.
Principle
The reaction rate can be determined by the increase in gas pressure during a chemical reaction. Assuming the Ideal Gas Law applies the relationship between pressure and moles of gas is directly proportional.
Tasks
In this experiment, you will:
1. Conduct the reaction of citric acid and baking soda.
2. Calculate the rate constant for the reaction.
3. Determine the rate law expression for the reaction.

1. Investigate rates of reactions for different surface areas of reactants
2. Investigate rates of reaction through rates of change of pH, conductivity, temperature or gas pressure
3. Investigate relationships among pH, conductivity, temperature and rate of gas production during a chemical reaction.
