VERNIER ORP SENSOR
The Vernier ORP sensor measures the ability of a solution to act as an oxidising agent or reducing agent. ORP stands for oxidation-reduction potential. ORP electrodes are often used to measure the oxidising ability of chlorine in swimming pools or to determine when the equivalence point has been reached in an oxidation-reduction reaction.

The Vernier ORP can measure redox potential in the range of –450 to +1100 mV. Readings toward the positive region of this range indicate a strong oxidising agent, while readings toward the negative region indicate a strong reducing agent.

Requirements:
This sensor requires suitable software and an interface such as one of the Vernier LabQuest variations or Vernier Go-Link.
For comprehensive details of the possible sensor/interface/software combinations see the Compatibility Guide link below.

ORP Electrode Specifications:
• Sealed, gel-filled, epoxy body, Ag/AgCl reference
• Storage solution pH-4/KCl (10 g KCl in 100 mL buffer pH-4 solution)
• 1 metre coaxial cable with BNC connector
• Temperature range 0–60ºC
• 12 mm OD
• Impedance: ~20kΩ at 25ºC
• ORP element 99% pure platinum band sealed on a glass stem

Electrode Amplifier Specifications:
(included with each ORP Sensor)
• Calibration (mV)
     Slope: 466.875
     Intercept: –559.793
• 13-bit resolution (SensorDAQ): 0.25 mV
• 12-bit resolution (LabPro, LabQuest 2, LabQuest, LabQuest Mini, TI-Nspire™ Lab Cradle, Go! Link or EasyLink): 0.5 mV
• 10-bit resolution (CBL 2™): 2.0 mV
• Power: 7 mA @ 5VDC
• Input Range: –450 to 1100 mV

Note:
Do not completely submerge the sensor as the handle is not waterproof.

This product is used in teaching these Australian Curriculum codes:
ACSCH103 - Equilibrium acids and redox reactions - Oxidation and reduction - A range of reactions, including displacement reactions of metals, combustion, corrosion, and electrochemical processes, can be modelled as redox reactions involving oxidation of one substance and reduction of another substance
ACSCH110 - Equilibrium acids and redox reactions - Oxidation and reduction - Cell potentials at standard conditions can be calculated from standard electrode potentials; these values can be used to compare cells constructed from different materials
ACSCH107 - Equilibrium acids and redox reactions - Oxidation and reduction - Electrochemical cells, including galvanic and electrolytic cells, consist of oxidation and reduction half reactions connected via an external circuit that allows electrons to move from the anode (oxidation reaction) to the cathode (reduction reaction)
ACSCH108 - Equilibrium acids and redox reactions - Oxidation and reduction - Galvanic cells, including fuel cells, generate an electrical potential difference from a spontaneous redox reaction; they can be represented as cell diagrams including anode and cathode halfequations
ACSCH104 - Equilibrium acids and redox reactions - Oxidation and reduction - Oxidation can be modelled as the loss of electrons from a chemical species, and reduction can be modelled as the gain of electrons by a chemical species; these processes can be represented using half equations
ACSCH106 - Equilibrium acids and redox reactions - Oxidation and reduction - The relative strength of oxidising and reducing agents can be determined by comparing standard electrode potentials
