IEC CHLADNI PLATES WITH VIOLIN BOW AND SAND
Chladni's plates are an interesting way of demonstrating vibrations in flat plates. Fine sand is sprinkled onto the metal plate which is rigidly supported at its centre. Passing a violin bow across the edge of the plate sets the plate vibrating or 'singing', allowing the behaviour of the sand and plate to be studied as the sand settles into patterns on the plate.
The audible 'singing' is created by the plate vibrating at its natural resonant frequency. When the natural relaxed state of the plate is disturbed by lightly touching the edge, the natural resonance will alter as will the vibration pattern on the face of the plate. Varying the 'touching' point on the plate and the 'bowing' point on the plate produces a variety of sand patterns.
